A house. In Blender. Built by an AI.

On September 3, 2026, OpenAI announced GPT-6 Astra, and architecture quickly became one of its most striking demonstrations. OpenAI’s house project connects an editable Blender scene with camera tours and a separate Unreal Engine 5 walkthrough; community projects expand the picture to landmarks, a campus, city streets, a recognizable interior and a subway station. Here are six architecture cases, with the source material and the differences that matter.

01 / Residential design

Demo 1 — The official one: a house in Blender, walked in UE5

The most authoritative starting point is OpenAI’s developers blog. Thomas Ricouard used Astra in Codex to design a house, refine its everyday details, and explore the result through Blender camera tours and an Unreal Engine 5 walkthrough. Architecture, furniture, materials and kitchen details all become part of a scene that can be revised.

The project began with a written design brief, then grew from a furnished pavilion into a larger home. Astra wrote scene-building Python and ran Blender through its executable in background mode, using the bpy API. The write-up also describes inspecting Blender through computer use. That gives the images substance: there is editable geometry, lighting and camera data behind the render.

What to watch above: the furnished spaces, materials and camera movement in the later Blender film. This is a finished camera tour, not a recording of every modeling step. The earlier interactive UE5 version is shown separately in the original tutorial.

02 / Landmark reconstruction

Demo 2 — Hundreds of photos → a San Francisco landmark

Sharif Shameem’s Palace of Fine Arts reconstruction, also shared in r/singularity, moves from an imagined home to a real San Francisco landmark. The original request paired a reference photo with a brief to research the site, model it in Blender and make a 30-second fly-through.

Shameem says Astra autonomously researched and found hundreds of photos, then iterated on its Blender scene, rendered intermediate frames and compared them with its collected references. It also found a historical document describing some column dimensions. He reports a mostly overnight run, with human steering for the sky and minor clipping. Read his process account.

Why 3D artists cared: reference gathering became part of the modeling task. Instead of stopping at the supplied image, the agent sought more evidence and used renders to check its developing scene. That suggests a useful research-and-revision loop; it does not establish a measured survey of the building.

I would recommend mapping out the scene first. make it broad, wide, it should feel like true san francisco. then emphasize the details for the close ups, make the lighting feel real, water, etc. this is a 30 second scene.

03 / Campus reconstruction

Demo 3 — A small reference pack → Apple Park in Blender

Max Weinbach estimated that he supplied about five photos and two videos. Astra gathered additional references and architectural material, then developed Apple Park in Blender. His follow-up also credits existing material libraries as part of the workflow.

Why the archive matters: it lets readers inspect multiple views and follow the work behind them. The project showcase documents continuing work on the ring and Steve Jobs Theater, as well as unfinished areas such as the Visitor Center. For architectural practice, the interesting prospect is a model that can keep absorbing research and revisions.

04 / Urban environments

Demo 4 — A week of work → Manhattan in Unreal Engine

Matt Shumer reported a week of development on a Manhattan world in Unreal Engine. His account describes Astra refining it street by street. This expands the architectural question from one building to connected streets, repeated elements and transitions between areas.

The useful distinction is scale. Shumer’s follow-up makes clear that New York remained unfinished and that finding a workable setup took experimentation. The source establishes an Unreal Engine environment; it does not establish a Blender stage, a complete city or measured geographic accuracy.

05 / Interiors & set design

Demo 5 — A set description → the Oval Office in Blender

In Higgsfield’s Oval Office demo, the reported workflow has three clear stages: Astra generates scene code from a set description, Blender builds the location, and Cycles renders it. Higgsfield says the pipeline ran on its Supercomputer platform.

Why this matters for interiors: the room, furniture, materials and lighting have to work together. A designer can review the arrangement before committing to the final camera view. The recognizable setting provides a visual reference, while dimensional accuracy still needs a separate check.

06 / Transport spaces

Demo 6 — Platforms, trains and a staircase: Central Line

Adam Lyttle’s Central Line station demo shows a subway environment with platforms, trains, columns and a central staircase. He reports 26 minutes and 10,460,032 tokens for the run with Astra Ultra. These are creator-reported figures for that session, not a standard time or cost.

In the replies, Lyttle identifies Three.js and fal MCP. The case belongs here as a browser-based spatial environment. A later playable game had a separate eight-hour development claim; it should not be confused with the initial station demo.

What to examine: the alignment of repeated columns, platform edges and stairs. Transport spaces make circulation and spatial consistency easy to discuss, even at the concept stage.

What the six demos have in common

Put them side by side and a pattern emerges: Astra operates tools, develops scenes and returns results that people can inspect. The workflows vary. Four cases use Blender; Manhattan is reported in Unreal Engine, and Central Line uses Three.js. Only some creators publish detailed build records, so the depth of evidence varies too.

For architects, set designers and anyone asked to make a space tangible, the implication is compelling: more attention can go into the brief, the spatial decisions and the review. A first model may become easier to obtain. The quality of the questions we ask of it still matters.

“This is so cool.” Then come the questions.

The first reaction is easy to understand. A task that used to begin with learning an unfamiliar interface can now begin with describing a place. Under the Palace of Fine Arts demo, Kenneth Cassel’s response combines enthusiasm with two practical questions: how was Blender controlled, and how long did it take?

Has it replaced the modeler?

The demos do not establish that. They show a promising way to create and revise scenes, with very different levels of finish. A client asking for a beautiful room is one task; asking for a precise change that preserves every approved dimension, material, and adjoining surface is another.

Fine detail can consume the run. Shumer acknowledged that Astra sometimes spent too much attention on small details. In the Palace project, Shameem reported some human steering for sky color and minor clipping, with most of the work running overnight. These are useful results, but the short published films conceal a longer process.

A render leaves mesh quality unanswered. A reply to Weinbach’s Apple Park post asks whether the topology, the arrangement of the mesh’s faces and edges, holds up. That is a question from a viewer, not a verified finding about the file. It points to a sensible next inspection: can the geometry support the edits you need?

Rendering time still matters. Weinbach said a lengthy video render limited further corrections because he did not want to keep his laptop occupied. None of these posts provides a reliable universal time or cost for an architectural scene.

Character modeling needs its own quality check. The house results do not establish equally convincing anatomy, likeness, or movement. In a separate creature experiment, Alix Ollivier described the modeling approach as slow and preferred generating a base mesh with another tool before using Astra for rigging and animation. Peter Gostev’s Craig Federighi recreation offers a visible human-character comparison. It is a useful reminder to judge people and organic forms separately from walls and furniture.

How to use GPT-6 Astra with Blender

Start with OpenAI’s house walkthrough. It documents a workflow through Codex and Blender’s Python API, rather than a dedicated house-generation button. The steps below combine that approach with a practical setup for your own first scene.

  1. Set up a local workspace

    Install Blender and follow OpenAI’s desktop quickstart to sign in and open a project folder. Start a Codex task, select GPT-6 Astra if it is available to your account, and tell it where Blender is installed. Keep the reference images and output files in that folder.

  2. Describe the space and the deliverables

    Give the building’s purpose, rooms, approximate size, atmosphere, and any reference images. Ask for an editable .blend file and preview renders. A single room is a manageable first experiment. The example below is our own starter brief, not a prompt from the official demo.

    Create a concept for a compact courtyard home in Blender. Start with a labeled floor plan and explain the room connections. Wait for my review before detailed modeling. Keep walls, openings, furniture, and lights separately editable. Save the .blend file and show an exterior view, an interior view, and a solid-mode cutaway. Flag assumed dimensions.
  3. Review the plan before adding detail

    Check entrances, room relationships, circulation, and furniture clearances. Ask for a revised plan when something does not work. Save an approved version before expanding the model, so a new design direction does not erase the previous one.

  4. Build, inspect, and ask for specific changes

    Have Astra construct the scene using Blender’s Python API. Review both renders and the untextured geometry. Point to a particular issue: a door opening, a furniture intersection, a material scale, or a misleading reflection. Reopen the saved file in Blender and inspect more than the camera’s preferred angle.

  5. Choose stills, a film, or an interactive walkthrough

    Finish with the output that supports your next decision. Approve a few preview frames before a longer render. If free movement matters, follow the tutorial’s separate Unreal Engine export and import stage, then check materials, collisions, and lighting again in that environment.

The official project used scripts run by Blender’s executable and also inspected the application through computer use. It does not make an MCP connector a prerequisite. Your first useful milestone is simply a saved scene you can open and meaningfully revise.

Three openings for architectural practice

These are plausible applications suggested by the demos, rather than evidence of a finished architectural production pipeline.

1. Early design and renovation options

A homeowner describes a kitchen that opens onto a courtyard. A designer turns that conversation into two layouts and a few interior views. The opportunity is to make alternatives tangible early, when changing the arrangement is still easy. Measured dimensions and an approved brief give those iterations something concrete to preserve.

2. Client presentations and spatial walkthroughs

A furnished scene can help a client understand how the entrance, living room, and garden relate. Stills communicate material and atmosphere; a walkthrough exposes sightlines and awkward transitions. The designer’s role is to explain which elements are proposed, which are confirmed, and what remains to be resolved.

3. Existing buildings and heritage visualization

The Palace of Fine Arts and Apple Park projects suggest a research-assisted path from photographs and public references to an explorable reconstruction. That could support exhibitions, educational models, or early renovation discussions. Missing information should stay visible as an assumption; a plausible reconstruction is not a measured survey.

A scene can communicate a design before it establishes that the design can be built. The next test is repeatability: can the system accept a specific revision, preserve what was approved, and produce files another professional can continue working with? That is where these demos become a useful architectural tool.
